Case: Bakkekvarteret – Industrialized Building Kits

Construction of 88 CO₂-optimized terraced houses in Vinge – delivered as industrialized building kits.

Bakkekvarteret in Vinge, southeast of Frederikssund, marks the beginning of a massive development in an area that will eventually house over 2,000 homes. It comprises 88 terraced houses across 1-2 floors, centered around community, nature, and extremely high sustainability requirements.

To meet the ambitions of building in a way that is CO₂-friendly, efficient, and scalable, the main contractor, Adserballe & Knudsen, has chosen an industrialized approach to the structural frame. Here, Gantio Robotics plays a key role as the vital link between digital drawings and the physical construction site.

The Unbroken Digital Chain: From ABCarpentry to Gantio Robotics

At Bakkekvarteret, we have demonstrated the full potential of “on-site industrialization.” In close collaboration with the engineering firm ABC, who developed the parametric design tool ABCarpentry, we have created a completely unbroken chain from 3D model to finished timber frame.

Data from ABC’s parametric models is fed directly into Gantio Robotics’ production system — with no manual intermediaries. Our gantry robots then translate this complex data into physical processing:

  • Every single piece of structural timber is cut to exact measurements (cut-to-size).
  • Grooves for joints and connections are executed with machine precision, including the practical tolerances needed for smooth on-site assembly.
  • All parts are ID-marked to match the assembly drawings 1:1, eliminating the need to decipher complex drawings on site.

As a result, the construction frames leave our factory as complete, custom-made building kits, arriving at Bakkekvarteret packed in a logical assembly sequence.

Sustainability on the Bottom Line: < 5 kg CO₂-eq/m²/year

Ikano Bolig has set the bar high with an ambition for Bakkekvarteret to emit less than 5 kg CO₂-eq/m²/year and achieve the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. This is achieved, in part, by using timber structures and wooden ground floor slabs mounted on screw foundations.

As the structural frame manufacturer, Gantio Robotics contributes directly to this calculation on two fronts:

  1. Minimum-waste production: Our nesting software and robotic precision minimize material waste at the factory and completely eliminate offcuts and construction waste on the site itself. On this specific project, total material waste is reduced to just 5%.
  2. Precise LCA documentation: Because everything is digitally traceable and robot-manufactured, we can provide exact data on material consumption down to the millimeter, making the project’s LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) calculations both easier and more accurate.
  3. No need for angle brackets: The 5 mm grooves make it easy to place the studs without using angle brackets. The grooves inherently stabilize the joints during assembly, holding everything in place until the structure is secured with the sheathing panels of choice.

The On-Site Advantage: Buildability and Speed

For the construction crew from Adserballe & Knudsen, the delivery from Gantio Robotics means they can bypass time-consuming and error-prone processes. Because every component is digitally defined and precision-milled, Adserballe & Knudsen had full predictability regarding time, cost, and materials from day one.

The carpenters receive a system designed to be assembled quickly, safely, and flawlessly. This transforms traditional carpentry into efficient assembly, secures the project schedule, and creates a significantly better and quieter working environment.

“Bakkekvarteret proves what is possible when you treat construction as an industrial process from start to finish. By directly linking ABC’s powerful parametric design with our robotic production, we have provided Adserballe & Knudsen with a structural frame that is not only sustainable but can also be assembled at a pace and with a quality that manual labor could never match. This is scalable, predictalble sustainability and efficiency in practice.”
